Van Hire in the South East: Routes, Depots & Tips
Van Hire in the South East: A Practical Guide
The South East has one of the most active property markets in the UK outside London. People move constantly โ graduates leaving Brighton for jobs in Guildford, families upsizing from Southampton flats to Hampshire villages, couples relocating from London to the commuter belt towns along the M3 and M25. Add in the constant flow of small business deliveries, furniture pickups from online sellers in far-flung postcodes, and the general need to move large things from one place to another, and it is no surprise that van hire is in constant demand across the region.
Types of Van Available
Van hire companies across the South East offer a standard range of vehicle sizes. Choosing the right one saves money and avoids the frustration of realising your wardrobe does not fit through the back doors.
- Small van (e.g. Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy) โ suitable for moving a few boxes, single-item collections, or light commercial deliveries. Drivable on a standard car licence. Typical daily hire from forty-five to sixty-five pounds.
- Medium van (e.g. Ford Transit Custom, VW Transporter) โ handles a one-bedroom flat move or a bulk furniture collection. Usually sixty-five to ninety pounds per day.
- Long wheelbase van (e.g. Ford Transit LWB, Mercedes Sprinter) โ suitable for two to three bedroom flat moves and larger loads. Around eighty to one hundred and twenty pounds per day.
- Luton van with tail lift โ the largest option on a standard licence. The box body and tail lift make loading heavy items much easier. Ideal for a full house move. Expect to pay one hundred to one hundred and fifty pounds per day.
South East prices are generally ten to fifteen percent higher than the national average, reflecting the regional cost of living and higher operating costs for hire companies.
Depot Locations
The South East is well served by both national chains and independent van hire companies. National operators like Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, and Sixt have depots in Brighton, Southampton, Portsmouth, Reading, Oxford, Crawley, Maidstone, and most of the larger commuter belt towns. Independent operators are often better value, especially for weekend hires, and tend to be more flexible about mileage allowances and late returns.
Clusters of independent hire companies can be found around the industrial estates near Gatwick Airport in Crawley, along the A27 corridor through Worthing and Chichester, in the Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford area near Southampton, and around the Aylesford industrial area near Maidstone. If you are near a university โ Brighton, Southampton, Oxford, Reading โ expect higher demand and limited availability during the September and June moving periods when students arrive and depart.
Key Routes and Driving Tips
Driving a hired van around the South East requires familiarity with the region's major routes and their idiosyncrasies:
- The M25 โ the orbital motorway is the South East's main artery and its biggest headache. Traffic is heavy at almost any time of day, and the stretch between the M23 junction (junction 7) and the M3 junction (junction 12) through Surrey is particularly congested. If you are using the M25, avoid morning and evening rush hours if at all possible. The Dartford Crossing charges apply to all vehicles, and vans over a certain weight pay a higher rate.
- The M23 โ connects the M25 to Brighton via Crawley and Gatwick Airport. A relatively straightforward motorway, but it transitions into the A23 south of Crawley, where it becomes a single carriageway through the South Downs. This stretch can be slow behind heavy vehicles on the hills.
- The M3 โ runs from the M25 through Basingstoke to Southampton and Winchester. Generally flows well except at the M25 junction and around junction 9 for Winchester. The M27 connects Southampton to Portsmouth along the coast and is usually manageable outside rush hours.
- The A27 โ the east-west coastal route from Eastbourne through Brighton, Worthing, Chichester, and on to Portsmouth. This road is part dual carriageway and part single carriageway, with notorious bottlenecks at Worthing and Arundel. Allow extra time if using this route in a large van.
- Brighton city centre โ the one-way system, narrow lanes, and steep hills make driving a large van through central Brighton genuinely challenging. If you are moving to or from the Lanes, Kemptown, or Hanover, plan your route carefully and check loading restrictions. The seafront road has limited stopping opportunities, and penalty charge notices are issued frequently.
Clean Air Zones and Low Emission Zones
As of 2026, several South East towns have introduced or are planning Clean Air Zones or Low Emission Zones. Southampton has had a Clean Air Zone in place since 2022 covering the city centre and docks area. Portsmouth has similar measures around the city centre. Before hiring a van for use in these areas, check the current emissions requirements and confirm with the hire company that the vehicle is compliant. Most modern hire fleet vehicles meet the required Euro 6 standard, but older vehicles from independent operators may not.
One-Way Hire
If you are moving from one city to another โ say Brighton to Southampton, Reading to Oxford, or London to the South East โ one-way hire is available from most national operators. You pick up at one depot and drop off at another. This is convenient but usually costs more than a return hire. The most popular one-way routes in the South East run between Brighton and London, Southampton and London, and between the various M25 corridor towns. Independent operators occasionally offer competitive one-way deals on these routes, so it is worth asking.
Insurance and Excess
Standard van hire insurance includes basic cover, but the excess can be high โ five hundred to one thousand pounds is typical. You can purchase a damage waiver from the hire company for fifteen to twenty-five pounds per day, or buy standalone excess insurance from a third-party provider for less. Whichever route you choose, check whether roof and underside damage are covered, as these are common exclusions. When loading, lay protective blankets or cardboard in the van to avoid damage charges to the load area, which hire companies charge for at eye-watering repair rates.
